CPR’s mission is to support a collaborative environment within UNM, aligned with core values of community partnership, social justice and respect for diverse narratives and worldviews in order to co-create new knowledge and translate existing knowledge to improve quality of life and health equity among New Mexico’s diverse populations and beyond.
Community based participatory research (CBPR) is a division within the Center for Participatory Research. CBPR is a partnership approach to research that engages community members at every step of the process and builds upon community strengths to address their priority health issues. This collaborative approach facilitates co-learning and works to strengthen community power to further health equity.
The projects at the Center for Participatory Research focus on indigenous health and wellness. Our team works with many tribes in New Mexico to improve health equity among indigenous and tribal communities. These projects aim to strengthen research capacity among our tribal partners for further research and programs with indigenous and tribal community members as creators and facilitators of the work.
Our co-learning and educational approaches within the Center for Participatory Research include workshops, modules, and classes designed with collaboration, collective reflection, and Freirian praxis in mind. These include the Community Based Participatory Action Research and Empowerment workshops to strengthen public health and community practice; and the annual UNM Summer Institute on Community Based Participatory Research for Health.
Our team is comprised of faculty and staff at the UNM campus who are dedicated to collaborating together on community-engaged research. Our partners include organizations and institutions working with the Center for Participatory Research, both on the UNM campus and elsewhere.
